My Energy Is Expensive

Project type

Wall Hanging Quilt

Date

January 2026

#LifeOfASewGirl
A Central Virginia Modern Quilt Guild (@CVaMQG) Challenge Project
“...create a quilt in orange and mint that reflects your next era…”
“My Energy Is Expensive”
26 x 29, Original Design

Yes, that's an actual vinyl record. The orange stage is leather, sewn on my APQS Millie. The binding is flanged. The hexis are hand sewn, machine sewn down because of the sequin fabric underneath. The backing fabric is TS 12 fabric with lots of great imagery and references. The line of bling along the stage is a repurposed bracelet. The flower is wire edged fabric which I deconstructed and reassembled.

Officially completed 1/19/2026…so do I change the label?
From a quick sketch and words captured while watching the Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl...to listening to the album on repeat while working on this project...to the final result today… This is the most out of the box quilt I've ever attempted. It is outside my comfort zone, but was not at all uncomfortable to create. I loved every step. I especially enjoyed allowing myself to try different techniques, materials, and arrangements as I went along. I had a general idea of the feel I wanted to create and just went with what felt right at each stage. As we like to say in my home, “I had a ‘tism about it.”

Glitter is everywhere.

I've never even listened to @taylorswift before the release party movie. Before that, I only heard bits about her, but can respect the kind of person she is and what she offers to others.

As I listened to album #12, I heard her tribute to her own beautiful love story love and their journey to reach this new era together. I was able to relate to the many emotions and experiences women face - betrayal, trials, support, self-doubt, masking, confidence…

Rather than just a personal reflection, I heard words of encouragement for all women. We are often our own worst critics, aren't we? I've struggled to believe I am an expert, especially in sewing, despite having pursued ongoing educational opportunities. As many women tend to do, I undervalue the work I offer. Taylor sends a message - a reminder - that we ARE worthy, but it's up to us to believe it.
So welcome to MY next era. My Magnolia Era, symbolic of perseverance and dignity. When I will finally take the risk, the leap of faith, the courage to begin…and begin quilting for others as The Meandering Magnolia.

For those Swifties out there, can you identify the references to her songs and other concepts?
